Barbecue Adventures

After finally purchasing a “serious” barbecue a couple of months ago, we have been trying to grill the heck out of it when the weather allowed, and in the past two weeks, the weather has been perfect. Steaks, check. Pork tenderloin, check. Chicken breasts, check. And that’s where it ended. Boring.

But then Kelly lent us her Barbecue Bible. So this weekend we invited our Argentinian friends over for dinner and we managed to whip up a simple but effective dinner: Barbecued Provolone Cheese on Bruschetta, Steak with green Chimichurri Sauce and grilled oregano zucchini, a green salad with balsamic maple syrup dressing and craisins. And it was FABULOUS! I was so proud of Erik for the great work at the grill, and of myself of course for putting it all together.

We won’t be opening a restaurant just yet, but we’ll continue to try our luck. Can’t wait for the next weekend to come!

All of Europe dances to this thing right now…

Best Playground… EVER. What a glorious July afternoon. It was very warm, but the water was a wee bit cold for swimming, but never too cold for playing in it.

New Theme

So I have found a new theme for my blog. For the umptheenth time. Will I stick with it this time? Who knows. Probably. Maybe. I will certainly, if I can change some of the “adornments”. I’ll have to work with Photoshop and see what I can come up with. The site is really pretty, but it doesn’t yell KARIN… it’s pretty, but it’s just not me. The detail, that’s me. What’s fun is that this is so frilly and girly and I’m not normally like that. I more plain, straight, linear. Heck, who knew someone as linear as me could fall in love with all that frill. Ok, all that frill minus the ribbon and the gold flower in the bottom left corner. :)

Germans winning over Neutrals

In my schooldays, Germany - West Germany - were the team no neutrals wanted to follow. They no longer had the class of Franz Beckenbauer and the deadly accuracy of Gerd Mueller; Karl-Heinz Rumenigge was cold-eyed and Teutonic and a pale imitation of Sting. And that was before we got to Harald “Bonecrusher” Schumacher. Even when they won in 1990 the positive energy that seemed to flow from Lothar Matthaeus and Pierre Littbarski was undermined by the much-maligned Rudi Voller.

They were monochromatic and dull, seemingly automated, like Kraftwerk would be if they were a football team. Not anymore. In three matches, where they have scored four goals each, they have buried that image, most emphatically against Argentina on Saturday.

It was said, before the game, an Argentina win would complete the job began in 2006, where a promising side were cut down by Germany in the quarter-finals. That actually holds more true for Germany; their play here is a continuation of the freedom of the mind and spirit that was seen throughout that tournament four years ago, on the field and in stands. It comes from the top - for example from the unashamedly fanatical Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose reaction to the first, early goal was to look around the VIP box and then do a little jig. It stems from Joachim Low, who looks as if he’s a paid-up member of Berlin’s hip, arty set.
